Copy of Commercial Type Talk: It’s not just about the money, it’s not just about the art.

It's not just about the money, it's not just about the art.
Five years of Commercial Type.

For the past five years Paul Barnes and Christian Schwartz have been running one of the most exciting and influential type foundries, Commercial Type, with offices in New York and London. They have managed to create both popular and critically acclaimed typefaces for a diverse range of organisations, from the Guardian Newspaper, Vanity Fair magazine, to shirt numbers for Puma at the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Their designs vary from the utilitarian Graphik and Stag, through to the playful and expressive Dala Floda and Marian. They will talk about the processes behind their designs, balancing the needs for expression, self expression and functionalism.

About Commercial Type

Commercial Type is a joint venture between Paul Barnes and Christian Schwartz, who have collaborated since 2004 on various typeface projects, most notably the award winning Guardian Egyptian. The company publishes retail fonts developed by Barnes and Schwartz, their staff, and outside collaborators, and also represents the two and their team when they work together on type design projects.

Following the redesign of The Guardian, the team headed by Mark Porter, including Barnes and Schwartz, was awarded the coveted Black Pencil by the D&AD. The team was also nominated for the Design Museum’s “Designer of the Year” prize. In September 2006, Barnes and Schwartz were named two of the 40 most influential designers under 40 in Wallpaper*.
