CAST OF CHARACTERS
Multilingual Scripts in Film Posters
“Typography is painting with words.” —Paula Scher
Cast of Characters showcases the beauty and diversity of languages and letterforms with international film posters, as film is a vehicle for sharing multicultural perspectives. This collection of vintage and modern film posters from the 1960s to 2000s features scripts of languages spoken in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and in diaspora communities around the world. The art of filmmaking is shared across the regions represented in Cast of Characters while the cornucopia of letterforms highlight variations in communication.
Cast of Characters invites you to reflect on the written word, not for its literal meaning, but as paintings that spark our curiosity, maybe even try our hand at the curves and lines that feel like drawing in the absence of understanding.
The exhibit will be on view at Bluecadet, 1526 Frankford Avenue, Phildelphia, from May 4–June 29. Please join us for a First Friday opening reception on May 4, from 6–9pm.
