About the Mentorship Program
Launched in 2010, the AIGA Philadelphia Mentorship Program pairs seasoned designers with emerging designers at the onset of their professional careers to provide encouragement, motivation, and guidance. Our term begins in January each year and concludes in June. The application period for the program opens annually in December.
Each mentoring relationship is unique: you set your individual goals with your partner, drawing on the experience of the mentor and the aspirations and interests of the mentee. Meeting schedules and venues are fully flexible to your schedule—though we hope you will be able to meet in person at least once a month.
AIGA Philadelphia provides ongoing support to you during the term. We host a Facebook group where you can post photos, events or general news. AIGA also hosts a series of optional mentorship-only events, workshops and happy hours where you can meet up with other mentors and mentees in the program (if you would like!).
Things to Keep in Mind
There is no strict format within the program, but we do have a few pointers to guide your experience:
- We hope this experience will be inspirational and rewarding to both you and your partner—but please keep in mind that it is not meant to be an internship or job-hunting program.
- We ask that you make time to meet up in person with your partner about once a month if possible. Many of our partners meet over lunch or dinner, at AIGA events, happy hour, lectures, or other design events in the city.
- We encourage you to follow our Facebook and Instagram accounts and to interact with other program participants by sharing photos, insights, interesting articles, ideas for trips or events, or any other experiences you want to share.
- And lastly, we ask that you be courteous. Let one another know when you are going to be available and unavailable. Be prompt in responding to voicemails and emails.
Who Should Apply?
Mentors: Active professionals—employed or retired—in the field of graphic design, communications, advertising, visual arts, digital or interactive media, or related areas with a minimum of five years of professional experience. Mentors are encouraged, but not required, to be members of AIGA. And we ask that you commit to being fully engaged in the mentoring relationship for the complete six months.
Mentees: Emerging designers of any age in their first five years of practice. Students in their last year of school (undergrad or graduate) may also apply. However, our first priority is to place practicing designers in the program. Mentees must be members of AIGA. And we ask that you commit to being fully engaged in the mentoring relationship for the complete six months.
While we do our best to place most applicants to the program, we do have a limited number of slots available each term. All applicants not matched in January will be placed on a priority list for next year’s program.
What is the cost?
There is no fee to join the program.
