Job Description:
The Department of Design at the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, Drexel University, seeks highly qualified candidates for the position of Department Head, effective September 2018. The Westphal College is ranked the 5th Best Design and Applied Art School in the USA by College Factual. Fashion was ranked 3rd in the USA and 11th in the world by the Business of Fashion in 2016; Design & Merchandising is rated 3rd in the USA by Fashionista.com; Product Design is ranked 14th in the nation by College Values; and Westphal’s Graphic Design program was recognized by Graphic Design USA with Highest Honors. Westphal’s Undergraduate and Graduate Digital Media programs are ranked Top 10 in the USA by The Princeton Review and graduate Interior Architecture has been ranked in the top ten in the USA by DesignIntelligence.Comprised of award-winning and nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate programs in Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Design & Merchandising, Photography, and Product Design, and an MS in Fashion and an online MS in Retail & Merchandising, the Department of Design also houses the Fox Historic Costume Collection. The Fox Collection contains over 13,000 articles of dress, textiles and fashion ephemera. The Department is located in the award-winning URBN Center, originally designed by Robert Venturi and transformed into a state of the art center for design and art by MSR, LTD., in 2013.
Qualifications:
The Department of Design seeks a forward-thinking leader who can balance the administrative rigors of Department Head with the demands of moving faculty and students into the future of design. Hailing from academia, industry, or a combination of both, the successful candidate will possess the ability to build upon the national and international recognition realized by the Department to promote excellence in education, research, and collaborative partnerships with external academic, private, or governmental organizations. A minimum of seven years of management experience is required, with a demonstrable record of success as an entrepreneurial and innovative leader of creative enterprise, either at an existing academic institution, or within a respected industry organization. A terminal degree is preferred and the chosen candidate must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, an ability to multi-task, and an extensive understanding of design process and design education.
Essential Functions:
The Department Head will supervise the strategic, financial and academic management of the Department of Design; represent the Department within the university and the design communities at large; provide counsel and leadership to program directors and faculty; oversee hiring, performance and tenure reviews; teach; and engage in fundraising activities for new initiatives. He or she will also foster collaborative, multidisciplinary projects and research across the college and university, and develop industry partners. He or She will also initiate ongoing processes for improvement of academic offerings and contribute to successful reaccreditation efforts, as all of the Department’s programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The successful candidate will support the College’s recruitment and marketing efforts, and help to create greater awareness of the excellence in the College.
