AIGA Philadelphia

Member Spotlight: Sukari Keetin

After establishing herself as a graphic designer and art director in Los Angeles, Sukari Keetin moved to Philadelphia and became an AIGA member soon after. By attending AIGA Philadelphia events, she gained a new network in our community of designers, volunteered on our board, and is now the co-chair of our Interactive team. Read below to learn more about Sukari, this month’s Member Spotlight.

Tell us a little about yourself. What is your current job?
I am a graphic designer and art director from Los Angeles, California. I studied Photography at California University of Long Beach and I have worked as a freelancer and in-house graphic designer for clients in a range of sectors including architecture, apparel, footwear, interior design, furniture design, luxury goods and education technology.

How long have you been in the field?
For a decade.

What important milestones do you credit to getting to where you are now?
Spotting an opportunity and learning how to jump in and get your hands dirty. It’s an opportunity that isn’t always possible when working exclusively under someone else’s roof. Taking these types of chances gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about myself, how I design, and how mindfulness techniques can assist in bringing clarity to the design problem at hand.

Also, an endless supply of gummy bears helps out a lot.

Why design? What inspires you to do the work you do?
I love how open this industry is. There are so many creative sectors to explore.

How long have you been an AIGA member?
I have been an AIGA member for a year, but I have been a regular attendee of AIGA events in Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Why did you join AIGA?
To network with a community of designers that range in experience and creative fields.

How have you benefited from your AIGA membership? What do you enjoy most about the Philadelphia Chapter of AIGA? Why should someone be a member?
Being a member of AIGA and volunteering for my local chapter is an enriching experience. AIGA has a strong network that is a valuable resource to put to use. When I moved to Philadelphia from Los Angeles two years, I didn’t know anyone. I just knew Philadelphia had an AIGA chapter that’s where I needed to start.
