This is My Philly: Students Mentoring Students

We believe there’s something special about all the communities that make up our city. No matter the size or location, we all feel a sense of pride and love for our neighborhood. Under the guidance of AIGA student mentors from around the region, kids ages 8-12 created a poem and supporting collage expressing their love for their home. Come appreciate the work of these young visionaries and tell us what makes your Philly unique.

In its fourth year, This is My Philly, a partnership with AIGA Philadelphia and Spells Writing Lab, helps kids celebrate their unique neighborhoods through words and pictures. Spells Writing Lab is a local organization that provides free writing workshops and after-school tutoring for a diverse mix of kids and teens.

The intent of This is My Philly was threefold: to promote the power of images and the written word, to promote art and design as a viable career option to inner-city elementary school students and to promote diversity in the field of graphic design. AIGA Philadelphia and Spells Writing Lab drew upon their complimentary creative skills to celebrate Philadelphia, a city of many neighborhoods. This is My Phillysought to engage and motivate participants by focusing on Philadelphia’s positive qualities, as well as the responsibility we all have in maintaining and improving our community.

All are invited! Free and open to the public. A special invitation is extended to the family, friends, and teachers of the elementary school participants and the college student volunteers.
