Helvetica, the movie.
A documentary by Gary Hustwit
WHEN: Tuesday, May 15, 2007

WHERE: Bossone Auditorium, Drexel University | 3150 Market Street Street | Philadelphia, PA 19106 | Map
COST: The Helvetica film is FREE to the public. First come first serve.
FEATURING:
Erik Spiekermann, Matthew Carter, Massimo Vignelli, Wim Crouwel, Hermann Zapf, Neville Brody, Stefan Sagmeister, Michael Bierut, David Carson, Paula Scher, Jonathan Hoefler, Tobias Frere-Jones, Experimental Jetset, Michael C. Place, Norm, Alfred Hoffmann, Mike Parker, Bruno Steinert, Otmar Hoefer, Leslie Savan, Rick Poynor, Lars Mller, and many more.
ABOUT THE FILM:
Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of an larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.
Helvetica encompasses the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, and invites us to take a second look at the thousands of words we see every day.
The film was shot in high-definition on location in the United States, England, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France and Belgium. It is currently in post-production and is slated to begin screening at film festivals worldwide starting in early 2007.
ABOUT THE TYPEFACE:
Helvetica was developed by Max Miedinger with Eduard Hoffmann in 1957 for the Haas Type Foundry in Mnchenstein, Switzerland. Haas' director Hoffmann commissioned Miedinger, a former employee and freelance designer, to draw an updated sans-serif typeface to add to their line. The result was called Neue Haas Grotesk, but its name was later changed to Helvetica, derived from Helvetia, the Latin name for Switzerland, when Haas' German parent companies Stempel and Linotype began marketing the font internationally in 1961.
Introduced amidst a wave of popularity of Swiss design, and fueled by advertising agencies selling this new design style to their clients Helvetica quickly appeared in corporate logos, signage for transportation systems, fine art prints, and myriad other uses worldwide. Inclusion of the font in home computer systems such as the Apple Macintosh in 1984 only further cemented its ubiquity.

Spring Lecture Series
Vol. No. 1
Lecture 2 | Paul Sahre
Paul Sahre is an independent graphic designer whose studio, Office of Paul Sahre, is located above a Dunkin Donuts at 14th Street and 6th Avenue in New York City. After a few unsatisfying stints designing for others, Paul Sahre established his own design studio, first in Baltimore and then in New York, where he has been since 1995. Consciously maintaining a small office, he has nevertheless established a large presence in American graphic design.
The balance he strikes, whether between commercial and personal projects or in his own design process, is evident in such things as the physical layout of his officepart design studio, part silkscreen lab where he prints projects for himselfor in his desire for equal parts logic and intuition in the work. His more recent work, such as book covers for author Rick Moodys novels Demonology and The Ice Storm or his design of the book American Photography 19, exhibit a crisper, more refined typographic and photographic approach, and point to a more editorial or authorial direction. In fact, in 2003, he co-authored with Danny Gregory Hello World: A Life in Ham Radio, a book based on a collection of QSL cards, which amateur radio enthusiasts exchange after communication with other operators around the world.

TOPIC: The Response Project(Response Factors & Direct Mail)
The Response Project looks at the intuitive, instinctive responses that lead people to notice certain kinds of direct mail and overlook others. The Response Project examines how variables like photos, words, graphics, colors, and especially paper affect this response. The results of the project are designed to help creatives, print production managers, and printers concept, sell, and produce more innovative direct mail that gets better results while highlighting the pivotal role that paper plays in achieving those results. In this presentation, we will explore these results and learnings.
